Perry Rotella of Forbes recently commented on the necessity of data excellence. He writes, ” I’ve mentioned time and again that operational excellence is paramount to any executive’s success. Recent events back that up. Last month’s disaster at JPMorgan is a cautionary tale of what happens when the reverse is true. Just ask Jamie Dimon, the bank’s chairman and chief executive officer. For CIOs, while thinking strategically may occupy most of their time, their ability to effectively drive day-to-day operations is what keeps them at the wheel. In today’s environment where data is the new oil, data is also the fuel for driving an operation to its desired destination.”
He continues, “That said, I’d like to dig a bit deeper into my thoughts about the three key considerations a CIO must address to ensure operational success in managing the data refinery.” First on the list: “Integrate data as an enterprise asset. The main components of that are: (1) Metadata management. Not knowing what you are integrating is worse than not integrating at all… (2) Taxonomies, or classification of categorical structures. Taxonomies help organize and label the data to make it more easily consumable. They can be supplemented with or replaced by sophisticated search functionality — but a mix of both is probably the ideal.”
