A new article out of the company reports, “Axibase Corporation, the software vendor behind products like Axibase Enterprise Reporter and Axibase Time Series Database, today announced the release of a new feature in ATSD specifically for customers recording data from Smart Meters in the energy and utilities sectors. This new feature is called Data Versioning. Network-enabled smart meters introduced over the last 10 years, which support BACnet, OSGP, SML, and Modbus protocols are instrumented to relay versioned data. Versioned data has a status attached to each data-point to qualify the results obtained by the smart meter.”

The article goes on, “Storing and reporting on versioned data in a scalable fashion presents a growing challenge for smart meter gateways and reporting tools, which rely on relational databases. Given the rigid schema constraints enforced by relational databases, many utilities struggle to accommodate both rich metadata and vast volume at the same time and this is where NoSQL solutions provide an efficient alternative. In the case of smart meters, each versioned data-point contains three meta-data fields describing the value: status, source, and change time. As networked smart meters are proliferating across the energy and utilities sectors, the ability to store versioned data at scale becomes vital.”
