Lauren McWilliams recently offered her definition of data governance. She writes, ” The general definition of governance is “the exercise of authority” over an area or domain. Authority is the power or right to give commands about, make final decisions over, or control something. So by the simple English meanings of the words, data governance would involve authority or power over data.”
She continues, “What data are we talking about and what is the importance of governing that data? In the modern business world, controlling master data is part of controlling the business itself – the organization can only make products that are set up in the material masters; the organization can only sell to customers that are set up in our customer masters; the organization can only purchase from vendors who are set up in the vendor master. So, governing master data is a crucial part of governing the business itself. Therefore, I would argue that controlling master data should be the primary focus of a data governance program.”
