Rene Millman of CloudPro.co.uk reports, “Two-thirds of senior managers have no idea where sensitive corporate data is stored within the organisation and nearly three-quarters of them do not have any systems in place to track which files have been stored in the cloud, according to a new survey. The research, carried out by data governance software provider Varonis, found that in companies where cloud-based storage is used, only nine per cent of respondents’ companies have a process for authorising and reviewing access to cloud repositories in place, with another 23 per cent still developing their access policies.”
Millman continues, “The remaining 68 per cent either have no plans in place that they are aware of, or live without formal processes for granting and reviewing access. The company said that without control over access, or knowledge of where potentially sensitive organisational data resides, data is virtually ‘up for grabs’. It said that there were risk and operational implications of moving data into a cloud environment and added that 78 per cent of those surveyed would prefer to use their existing permissions and storage if they were able to provide collaboration and file synchronisation services similar to those available in the cloud.”
