The Object Management Group (OMG®) will be holding a Workshop and Information Day on Semantics at its quarterly technical meeting in Reston, VA. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 19th and Wednesday, March 20th at the Hyatt Regency hotel.
The event will give attendees the option to focus on the uses of semantics in three key industries: healthcare, finance and government.
“Semantic technologies are remaking financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and even defense systems,” said Dr. Richard Soley, Chairman and CEO of OMG. “The purpose of the Semantic Information Day is to explore how semantics can be used in these industries while laying the groundwork for future semantic-based standards.”
On Day 1 of the event, attendees will be able to choose between two tutorial tracks:
- Track 1 will include the tutorial “Ontology and Rules Development in the Context of OMG Standards” by Elisa Kendall of Thematix Partners LLC. This lecture is the perfect introduction for those who are just beginning to “get their feet wet” in the field.
- Track 2 focuses on using “OMG Standards in Semantics for Automation in Clinical Healthcare.” Speakers will include Craig Stancl and Cory Endle, Clinical Informatics Systems, Mayo Clinc.
Day 2 begins with the keynote address- “The Importance of Standards and Semantics in Improving Healthcare Delivery and Outcomes and Reducing Costs”- which will be delivered by Dr. Doug Fridsma, Director, Office of Standards and Interoperability and Acting Chief Scientist, Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, US Department of Health and Human Services. The morning will also include talks by Dr. Christopher Chute, Biomedical Informatics, Mayo Clinic and Mr. Kshemendra Paul, Program Manager, Information Sharing Environment, U.S. Government.
In the afternoon, attendees will be able to choose to attend workshops that focus on what is currently working and what still needs to be done for semantic standards in healthcare, financial services and government applications.
To close the event, there will be a panel discussion led by keynote and session leaders to summarize the results of the workshops. The goal is to notice trends and begin laying the groundwork for future semantic standards work.
Both OMG members and interested nonmembers are encouraged to attend the event. To learn more or to register, visit http://www.omg.org/news/meetings/tc/dc-13/special-events/Semantic_Info_Days.htm.
