To expand its reach to consumers who prefer to conduct business using the internet or call centers, American Family acquired Homesite Group, and direct property insurance company, and helped create Assure Start, a startup direct small business insurance distributor, in 2013. These companies join The General, a direct auto insurance company American Family acquired in 2012. Today, one or more companies of American Family Insurance Group operate in 46 states. Coordinating and governing the metadata across such a large enterprise is vital to drive better business decisions.
In this session, Lydia Reid will discuss how AmFam carved out a separate managerial role to handle metadata to reflect the importance of metadata to the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). This recently established program reflects the unique importance of metadata to the overall success of an Enterprise Data Management program.
She will discuss an approach to setting up the metadata unit within the business to work with IT to promote the following topics:
- Quantifying the business benefits and value of metadata
- Leveraging the role of metadata tools and data stewards in governing metadata
- Establishing best practices in creating a business glossary (common business vocabulary) and metamodel
- Deeper look into the need for and methods used to inventory sensitive data
About the Speaker
Metadata and Reference Data Manager, American Family Insurance
Lydia Reid joined American Family Insurance’s new Enterprise Data Management department in November 2013 as the first Metadata and Reference Data Manager. Since joining AmFam, Lydia has worked with I/S to implement and populate a centralized metadata repository tool, structured and begun to populate AmFam’s common business vocabulary, and hired a strong team to implement enterprise metadata management. For a short while Lydia also managed EDM’s Data Governance and Data Quality team until a permanent manager was brought on board. She is also Secretary for and Board Member of the Data Governance Professionals Organization. Lydia spent the majority of her early career at the National Archives in Washington, DC where she was the product owner of the agency’s first centralized, descriptive catalog for the entire Archives’ historical records. While at the National Archives, she led the effort to establish metadata standards and represented the Archives on several national and international metadata standards’ committees. Lydia has a BA and MA in History from Washington and Lee University and the University of Virginia, respectively. She also has a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Maryland.
