Data modeling competition company Kaggle has raised $11 million in Series A funding. According to the article, “Kaggle’s platforms allows for the posting of questions to some 17,000 participating PhD-level data scientists around the globe, with scientists then competing to come up with the best answers. Competitions can be public or private when sensitive information is involved, with only pre-screened scientists involved.”
The article notes, “Already, the platform claims significant results. One competition for NASA, the Royal Astronomical Society and the European Space Agency identified new ways to map dark matter in the universe, besting decades of space research and analysis in just weeks, the company says.”
It continues, “Another helped better determine the likelihood that the health of an HIV patient would improve or deteriorate. Kaggle is currently hosting the $3 million Heritage Health Prize, the largest medical prize ever, designed to help reduce billions of dollars in unnecessary hospitalizations. Customers have included Allstate Insurance, Deloitte and the Ford Motor Co.”
