John Myers of Inside Analysis recently predicted, “The truly game changing use case for Big Data is the predicted increase in data coming from machine-to-machine (M2M) sensor and activity log information. This data is going to come from all sorts of devices – cars, trains, planes, refrigerators, air conditioners and wireless devices like smart phones, tablets and medical devices. All of this data will allow for the cost optimization of various industries such as utility grids, logistic supply chains and location-based services.”
“However,” he continues, “when we start to talk about pulling sensor and/or log file information from just about every conceivable device, a set of problems arises. First, sooner or later you have to move the information from the devices to a location to analyze it. This data will be coming from a massive number and variety of devices and platforms. Many devices will be without the tight connectivity that is available within the social media and financial trading communities. Second, the data will be enormous both in terms of absolute size and the number of records. Financial trading and telecommunications have advantages since they access a relatively low number of sources. Social media and Internet search have advantages regarding the relatively low number of formats despite the continued increase in social platforms.”
