A new article reports, “NoSQL databases are making a splash with key endorsements from IBM and Oracle and an influx of venture capital funding. NoSQL targets applications that generate, or need to work with, very large datasets–hence, the ‘big data’ challenge. Backers say the technology’s horizontal scalability makes it better suited than relational databases to handle some data management problems. NoSQL software is generally viewed as a complement to relational technology, rather than a replacement.”
The article adds, “Although the technology has been around for a few years, NoSQL has captured the spotlight of late. IBM and Oracle, mainly associated with the relational category, are both talking NoSQL these days. On October 24, Oracle made its NoSQL database available for download via the Oracle Technology Network. A company official said the Oracle NoSQL database would be of interest to customers acquiring ‘massive amounts of data,’ per PCWorld.”
It notes, “Small and midsized businesses may not immediately need the scalability of NoSQL databases. But the technology is probably worth tracking, especially for businesses dealing with social media and other applications that can rapidly create large amounts of data. NoSQL represents another layer for organizations to consider in a data governance strategy.”
