Last night, at the New York Times Building in Manhattan, the Lotico New York City Semantic Web Meetup group was introduced to rNews. Presenting to the group were Andreas Gebhard (Getty Images), Stuart Myles (Associated Press), and Evan Sandhaus (New York Times).
By all reports, it sounds like rNews was very well received, and there were several takeaways from the evening. At one point, Stuart Myles offered seven concrete ideas for ways in which rNews could be used.
Seven ideas for how to use rNews
- Better news search. rNews allows for inclusion of richer metadata and more flexible presentation of content across sites, and it does so without requiring an API.
- Better advertising placement based in metadata instead of just text. Allowing for better contextualization and helping avoid unfortunate juxtapositions.
- Better analytics. Adding specificity to to the content allows publishers to track what visitors are consuming on the metadata level instead of the page level.
- Leverage Metadata for bookmarks. Automatically tag based on publisher classifications. Can result in richer presentation – title, thumbnail, lede, date.
- Add “Nutritional labels” for news. That is, improve transparency and trust by summarizing and exposing key metadata for readers (such as sources).
- Build alert options based on metadata. Allow users to sign up for notifications based on an article’s byline, source, location, etc.
- Enrich your API by embedding displayable metadata within the content of your HTML documents.
