September Letter from the Editor

August 31, 2012

We ended August with our second annual NoSQL Now! Conference and Expo in San Jose. Overall it was a great success, attendance up 25% from last year, and we covered a review of the key conference content from Evan Quinn, someone not affiliated with DATAVERSITY. His blog is very well written and informative, and we thank him for the insights. We also wrote a Press Release to share our own thoughts on the conference as well as give a huge thanks to our sponsors who brought such amazing diversity to the exhibit floor and who of course make the conference possible.

A special, “Thank You!” to everyone who stopped by the DATAVERSITY booth to say hello. The best part of a conference for me is meeting all the people I’ve worked online with or attended a webinar with in person. It’s so nice to have a face-to-face conversation and be able to shake someone’s hand.

The comment I heard from almost everyone who stopped by the DATAVERSITY booth at the conference and was already familiar with the site was what great content we have. I cannot tell you how much that means to me and I have most certainly started passing on all the thanks to our writers and contributors. We are very fortunate to have the level of Industry Leaders who blog for us, Angela for writing the Data Daily and Jobs of the Day, and the quality writers who spend hours researching and writing our articles.

We are excited to announce and say that we will be taking that writing to the next level in producing our own white papers and more research papers. In the works right now:

  • Research Papers:
    • We have a research paper currently being written by Graeme Simsion and Charles Roe titled, “Big Challenges in Data Modeling,” the same name as our webinar series moderated by Graeme. The content will be based off years of doing modeling surveys started by Wilshire Conferences, plus everything we’ve heard in the webinars thus far from attendees.
      • This will be published in Q4 2012.
    • Shortly after that we will begin a new survey on Data Architecture to kick off the research and writing of a paper on that topic.
      • This will be published in Q1 2013.
  • White Papers:
    • We are writing a white paper in September in collaboration with sponsor ASG. We’re very excited about this. Title being finalized, but partnering with ASG and Ian Rowlands (who also blogs for us and wrote the white paper, ASG Checkers to Chess), there is no doubt in my mind it’s going to be hot!
      • We will publish the paper as soon as it is completed.
      • The paper will also be printed and distributed at our DG Winter conference in December.
    • There are a few more titles under works that are so hot I dare not publish the title for fear someone will try and take our ideas! Needless to say I am excited about them and can’t wait to share more.

So keep an ear to the ground on all this and more coming to the website! I hope to meet more of our subscribers in person in the months to come at our conferences.

Regards,

Shannon Kempe
