Thanks for your thoughtful comments! I believe all firms are struggling with this dilemma. End users tend to gravitate toward office productivity tools that are at their disposal and are easy to use, without realizing the big picture. I tried to highlight the advantages of utilizing a commercial tool – which will enforce formal controls, promote re-use and provide transparency into the various adhoc projects that usually run under the radar.

Great post. The use-Excel-or-use-dedicated-tool dilemma is one we see all the time. I think that with the proper approach and tooling, users can have the best of both worlds.
