Todd Harris of Aveska recently shared three tips for enhancing Data Governance strategy. The first tip is to involve business users: “For data modelers and architects, it’s tempting to go it alone, but important to involve those who initiate the need for data governance. That is, those who might know a few things about the data, namely the business users. The business users are often very familiar with the data since it’s most likely a direct result of a program they are directly involved in. This will help clarify the importance of the data and create a more unified approach to governing it. Right off the bat, with the business users involved, data ownership can be established to some degree.”
Next, set the process early: “Early on in any data governance program, reliable business process are needed as a baseline to support the volume of data and IT resource commitments. Having business-driven processes in place creates a sustainable data governance model that will effectively manage data access risk, establish data access policies, and ultimately help reduce inappropriate access of sensitive information. This could be data residing on storage devices, Microsoft SharePoint servers, or Windows file servers for example.”
